Spring 2023 HSNC Meeting, Raleigh, NC

Our Spring 2023 meeting will be held on 14 April in Raleigh at the City Museum (CORM) at 220 Fayetteville Street, south of the Capitol and in the historic
former Briggs Hardware Store. Our gracious host will be the museum’s Executive Director and HSNC member Ernest “Ernie” Dollar. Come and bring a friend to
this special meeting and program. If parking is a concern … no worries………..much! The museum is easily accessible via on-street parking and three parking decks located within a block of the museum. Carpooling is encouraged. You can find more information on parking at godowntownraleigh.com by clicking on “Get Around”. There is also a public parking lot on E. Jones Street and it’s just a “leisurely 3-block walk” south to the Museum (and an urgent care is just around the corner on Hargett Street). Make sure you have something reflective for nighttime use as well.

    • Introductions of our panel: Valerie Johnson (Shaw University), Richard Cox (University of North Carolina at Greensboro), and Dan Fountain (Meredith
      College). Dean Johnson will be the moderator and the two speakers will discuss the Digital Library on American Slavery at the University of North
      Carolina at Greensboro and the Legacies of Slavery: Reckoning with the Past project at Meredith College.
  • 5:30-6:00 pm, Business Meeting (HSNC Members only) (Museum’s front entryway), Agenda includes Constitutional reform discussion and details on the
    Edmonds-Gavins Award.
  • 6:00-7:00 pm, Dinner (Museum’s Main Exhibit Area), RESERVATIONS REQUIRED!!, Details below.
  • 7:00-8:30 pm, Evening Session, (Museum’s front entryway)
    • Karin Zipf, Memoir for Ralph Scott
    • Introduction of Ernest “Ernie” Dollar, Jr. who will discuss his recent book, Hearts Torn Asunder: Trauma in the Civil War’s Final Campaign in North Carolina (Savas Beatie, 2022). He will have books for purchase and signing (in other words- bring cash).

Dinner Reservations

Members are asked to let us know NO LATER THAN APRIL 5 th if they wish to make reservations for dinner. Send your RSVPs to Michael Perdue at
history6557@yahoo.com. The cost will be $27.00 per person. Checks for dinner may be sent to our Treasurer, Jason Tomberlin, Wilson Special Collections
Library, UNC; CB 3948, Chapel Hill, NC 27599.

Members may also bring their checks to the meeting and can also be coupled with dues payments if so desired.

The Big Easy Restaurant (next door to the CORM) will cater.

  • Appetizers: Grilled Shrimp Baton Rouge and Pimento Cheese Fritters.
  • Main course: Big Easy Salad, Shrimp and Gouda Grits, Spinach Cheese Ravioli, Garlic Broccoli. Non-alcoholic drinks.
  • The Big Easy has extended a gracious invitation to HSNC members to come visit their bar, (after the meeting, please) located next door to the Museum.
