TIME & PLACE: The Spring 2019 convening of the Historical Society of North Carolina will be on Friday afternoon and evening, April 12th on the campus of Campbell University at Buies Creek in Harnett County. Our program will commence with a social time at 3:00 pm. All activities will be in the Alumni Room in Marshbanks Dining Hall.  Members of the Executive Council will meet at 2:00 pm.

PROGRAM: We have an excellent array of topics for our program. In the afternoon Robert Anthony and Kristen Merryman will present “Using NC Digital for Research and Teaching” while Willis Whichard and colleagues will present “Observing the Contributions of a Quiet Man: H.G. Jones (1924-2018).” Our after dinner speaker will be Bruce Stewart who will deliver “Perfecting a Free Government: Herman Husband’s Life after the North Carolina Regulation.” In the afternoon in addition to noting the passing of Dr. Jones we will also have a memoir for Dr. Anne Firor Scott who died this winter. Moreover, we will consider the nomination of two new prospects for membership.

PAYMENT: If you wish to pay for the buffet meal the cost is $25.00 and can be sent to our treasurer, Ralph Scott, 309 South Library Street, Greenville, NC 27858 (deadline for checks mailed is April 6th) or you may elect to bring a check to the April meeting. The deadline for reservations is April 8th and may be sent to Ralph Scott at SCOTTR@ecu.edu.

DIRECTIONS/PARKING: We encourage members to carpool. Campbell University is located at Buies Creek in central Harnett County, approximately six miles east of Lillington (the county seat) and four miles west of downtown Coats, and near the intersection of NC 27 and US 421. (Attendees coming on stagecoach or jitney from the west will note that the Cape Fear River can be crossed safely- but not forded- at Lillington). Overnight sojourners may consider among the local hostelries or boarding/rooming houses the Microtel in nearby Lillington. You may wish to consult your WPA NC Guidebook for local points of interest!) If one is coming from Fuquay-Varina on Hwy 401, go through the light at the big intersection in Lillington, NC, McDonald’s will be on your left and you will intersect with US 421. After going south for three miles, the campus will be on your left, and take a left on Judge Taylor Road, and about a quarter of a mile Parking Lot Q will be on your right.  If you are coming from Benson on Highway 27, stay on 27, you will go through Coats, NC and continue on Highway 27, for about three miles it will become Leslie Campbell Ave, continue through the first traffic circle, and at the second traffic circle take a right on T.T. Lanier Street, and Marshbanks and G Parking lot will be on your right at the intersection of T.T. Lanier St. and Judge Taylor Road. Parking lots G and Q will have 20 spaces each for our use.
