Our Meeting Itinerary

3:00 PM: Social time with light refreshments

3:30 PM: Afternoon Session: Tour of the QAR Lab

Since 1996, underwater archaeologists from the NC Office of State Archaeology have recovered nearly 500,000 artifacts from site 31CR314, the wreck of Blackbeard’s infamous flagship Queen Anne’s Revenge (QAR). The QAR Conservation Lab, where all artifacts from the site are meticulously conserved and researched, was established in partnership with East Carolina University in 2004. The QAR team of archaeologists and conservators work to uncover details of daily life aboard a pirate ship as well as information about the ship’s involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade during its previous life as La Concorde, a French slave-trading vessel. Join us as we lead you through an artifact’s journey from recovery to conservation, research, discovery, interpretation, and exhibit.

5:00 PM: Business Meeting. We will have several important items to discuss, including the election of new officers and members.

6:00 PM: Dinner will be provided by Meating Ground Café. The cost is $25 per person.

7:00 PM -8:00 PM: Evening Session

We will have the presentation of memoirs of two recently deceased members: Drs. Donald G. Mathews and Peter Carmichael. The evening feature presentation will be delivered by former president Dr. Karin Zipf. Her talk is titled “Farmworker Friend: Joan Preiss, the United Farm Workers and Boycotts as a Strategy of Resistance.”
