The Fall 2017 HSNC meeting will be held Friday, October 20th, in the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

2:00-3:00 pm     Council Meeting—Wilson Library, Room 710

All sessions below will be held in Wilson Library, Pleasants Family Assembly Room 503, unless otherwise noted.

3:00-3:30 pm: New Voyages to Carolina: Reinterpreting North Carolina History, Larry Tise, East Carolina University, and Jeffrey Crow, North Carolina, Office of Archives and History, Director Emeritus

3:30-4:00 pm: “At a Conservation Crossroads: William W. Ashe and Longleaf Pine in North Carolina,” Rob Shapard, UNC-Chapel Hill

4:00-4:30 pm: Break, with light refreshments

4:30-5:15 pm: Discussion of the Commemorative Landscape in North Carolina

5:15-6:00 pm: Business meeting (members only)

6:00-6:45 pm: Dinner (Wilson Library Room 504)

6:45-7:30 pm: Presidential address, “To Save Wayward and Willful Boys from the Sad and Certain Consequences of Ignorance and Sin”: Governor Thomas W. Bickett and the Case of the Ashe County Deserters,” Robert Anthony, UNC-Chapel Hill

Parking

Updated 10/10: The most convenient parking for this meeting will be the Rams Head Parking Deck at 33 Ridge Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. The rate is $1.50/hour.

Directions to the deck:

From I-40 (from Raleigh and points east)

• Take Exit 273-A (NC 54 West) towards Chapel Hill
• Continue for 4 miles to the top of the hill
• Turn left at traffic light onto Country Club Road
• Go 100 feet, and then turn right onto Ridge Road
• Continue along Ridge Road, passing baseball stadium on your left.  Immediately after passing Stadium Drive, which will be on your right, look for Rams Head Parking Deck also on your right.
• Go to Visitors (second) entrance

From Interstate 85 (coming from Greensboro and points west)

• Take I-40 East towards Raleigh
• Exit 273 and turn right at the end of the exit ramp
• Continue straight for 4 miles to the top of the hill
• Turn left at traffic light onto Country Club Road
• Go 100 feet, and then turn right onto Ridge Road
• Continue along Ridge Road, passing baseball stadium on your left.  Immediately after passing Stadium Drive, which will be on your right, look for Rams Head Parking Deck also on your right.
• Go to Visitors (second) entrance

From Interstate 85 (from Durham and points north)

• Follow I-85 to intersection with US 15-501 South
• Follow 15-501 South toward Chapel Hill; the highway will divide
• Remain on 15-501 South (Bypass) bearing left, away from Franklin Street
• Turn right at NC 54 Exit toward UNC-Chapel Hill
• Continue to the top of the hill
• Turn left at traffic light onto Country Club Road
• Go 100 feet, and then turn right onto Ridge Road
• Continue along Ridge Road, passing baseball stadium on your left.  Immediately after passing Stadium Drive, which will be on your right, look for Rams Head Parking Deck also on your right.
• Go to Visitors (second) entrance
