Longtime ECU archivist and HSNC member Donald Lennon passes

We note with sadness the passing of HSNC member Dr. Donald Lennon on April 26, 2018.

As Director of the East Carolina Manuscript Collection and later Coordinator of Special Collections, Dr. Lennon was responsible for the establishment of ECU’s University Archives and shaped the development of Joyner Library’s Special Collections for over thirty years. Under his leadership both the University Archives and the manuscript collection became part of Joyner Library. Don also initiated the creation of Joyner’s rare book collection.

However, it was from his longtime management of the manuscript collection that Don derived his greatest professional pleasure and pride. Among the many treasures that he secured for posterity are the Elias Carr Papers, Robert Morgan Papers, Murfreesboro Historical Association Collection, the Walter Beaman Jones Papers, the Charles Laban Abernethy Papers, the Lucy Cherry Crisp Papers, and the Moseley Map.

President Maury York will deliver a memoir on Dr. Lennon’s life and service at our October meeting. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Dr. Lennon’s family and his wide circle of friends and colleagues.
